D Public standing
Within months of taking office, Pistorius rose to the top of the regular popularity rankings published by German broadcasters and polling institutes, including ARD’s DeutschlandTrend and ZDF’s Politbarometer. Several surveys in 2024 found him to be the most popular politician in Germany, an unusual position for a defence minister in a country traditionally sceptical of the military.
That popularity was the basis of the November 2024 debate about whether he should be the SPD’s candidate for chancellor. Polls measure approval of a person, not of a policy: surveys in the same period showed Germans divided on issues he championed, such as a return to compulsory military service and long-range weapons for Ukraine.
